Did you know? Before any employee can process, handle or transport dangerous goods by air, they must hold a valid record of training and assessment aligned to their exact duties.

Under IATA DGR 1.5.1.2.1, the regulatory burden falls on employers. Employers are responsible for ensuring their personnel are fully competent before they carry out any dangerous goods functions. IATA now mandates a Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) approach. This competency must be achieved through training and assessment relevant to each individual’s role.

Required training includes:

✔General Familiarization
Employees must understand the general provisions and core principles of dangerous goods regulations.

✔ Function-Specific Training
Personnel must be trained to competently perform the specific tasks they are responsible for, in line with transport regulations.

✔ Safety Training
Training must include hazard awareness, safe handling procedures, and emergency response actions relating to dangerous goods.

✔ 24 Month Clock
Personnel must undergo recurrent training and assessment within 24 months of their previous training to keep their certifications valid and up to date with evolving regulations.
